History & Description

The Pictou Island West End Lighthouse began service in 1907 as a square wooden tower, painted white, on the island's western end above the Northumberland Strait. It later served as a rear range light between 1962 and 1968 before being superseded by the Pictou Island South Light in 1974. The structure is no longer standing and the light no longer operates.

Through its working life the tower carried a 6th order dioptric lens from 1922 to 1943. Along with the other Pictou Island lights it helped guide the island's fishing and ferry traffic through often foggy strait waters. Pictou Island remains a quiet, sparsely populated place reachable only by boat, and the west end is a favourite with walkers exploring the island's shoreline along the Sunrise Trail region.
