History & Description
Schafner Point Lighthouse, also known locally as the Port Royal lighthouse, was built in 1885 and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the Annapolis Basin. Located on the north shore of the Annapolis River facing Goat Island, this tapered square wood tower with a red lantern has guided mariners through the river's northern channel for over 140 years. The lighthouse was designated as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act in 2015 and is maintained by the Port Royal Lighthouse Association.
The lighthouse was automated by 1993 and remains operational, showing a fixed white light. In recent years, the Port Royal Lighthouse Association has undertaken significant restoration work to preserve this historic structure for future generations. The lighthouse is visible from Granville Road, and a monument to local fishermen lost at sea stands nearby, honoring the community's deep maritime heritage.
