Quick Facts
History & Description
Bear River Lighthouse was built in 1905 on Winchester Point at the western entrance to Bear River in Digby County. The tapered square wood tower stands 32 feet tall and once guided marine traffic through the Annapolis Basin into Bear River. It was designated as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act in 2015 and further protected by the Municipal Heritage Act in 2023.
After being decommissioned, the lighthouse was leased by the Smiths Cove Historical Society from the Municipality of Digby in 2021. The society raised funds in eight months and developed a five-year plan to transform the lighthouse site into a public park. Today, it stands as a heritage landmark open to visitors, with a seven-minute walk from the designated parking area at Smiths Cove Lighthouse Park.
