History & Description

The Boars Head Lighthouse stands on the northern tip of Long Island at Tiverton, marking the northwest entrance to Petite Passage on Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy shore. The present light is a tapered square wooden tower about 33 feet tall, painted white with a red lantern, still standing and operational as an active aid to navigation.

The original 1864 light was a red lantern mounted on the roof of a white keeper's dwelling, carrying a revolving red-and-white catadioptric lens. A fog signal was added in 1914, and the tower was replaced by the current tapered wooden structure between 1941 and 1960, then automated by 1987. Boars Head watches over some of the highest tides in the world, reached via the Digby Neck ferry along the Evangeline Trail.
