History & Description

Grand Passage Lighthouse stands on the north point of Brier Island at the entrance to the dramatic tidal channel known as Grand Passage. Also known locally as Northern Point, the present tower is a white square structure attached to a fog-signal building, marking one of the Bay of Fundy's most storied island approaches.

A lighthouse has guarded this point since 1901. The original tapered square wood tower received a fog bell in 1904 and was upgraded over the years with a fifth-order dioptric lens, at one time showing a fixed red light. Between 1964 and 1966 it was replaced by the tower that stands today, which was automated by 1988.

The lighthouse is owned by the Municipality of the District of Digby and has a distinguished service record: it once operated as a Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Base and today still houses the Coast Guard lifeboat crew. Reached by car on Brier Island along the Evangeline Trail, it is one of Nova Scotia's most photographed western lights.
