Features & Highlights
Detailed Information
The Deanery Project is a community environmental-education centre on 25 oceanfront acres in Lower Ship Harbour, 65 km east of Halifax on the Eastern Shore. Since 2011 it has run programs on natural building, permaculture, forests, energy, and traditional skills from a former summer-camp site whose property runs down to the shoreline of Ship Harbour; the centre frames its work as environmental education for all ages. The land backs onto protected wilderness, Ship Harbour Long Lake and Tangier Grand wilderness areas and the coast of the 100 Wild Islands, and 4.5 km of trails cross the managed woodlot, open to the public year-round at no charge. It holds a 4.9-star Google rating from 27 reviews, the strongest score of any Eastern Shore attraction in our listings.
The project's own description of its setting is direct: "Informed by permaculture design principles, natural building, and the arts, the Deanery offers programs and projects related to energy, climate, forests, health, active transportation and rural living, community building and traditional skills." In practice that means school groups building cob ovens, artist residencies, trail workshops, and a steady calendar of weekend events, alongside a property that functions as a demonstration site for woodlot management and coastal restoration.
4.5 Kilometres of Free Trails, Open Year-Round
The trail network is the part most visitors use. It threads the managed woodlot β habitat for native trees, wildlife, and what the centre calls its "forest guardians" β and it is always open for self-guided walks. The one ask: drop by the main building first to let someone know you are on the land. Physical trail maps and species identification cards are available in the main hall, which makes the loop as much a nature lesson as a walk.
The trails' real payoff is geographic. The property extends to the Ship Harbour shoreline with water access toward the protected islands, so a visit here pairs naturally with the Eastern Shore's bigger coastal assets, the wild-islands coast that day-paddlers explore further east. Hikers can string the Deanery loop with Taylor Head Provincial Park or the Musquodoboit Trailway for a full day on the shore.
Workshops, School Programs, and the Built Site
The buildings themselves are part of the teaching. The site demonstrates natural construction β cob, straw-bale, and timber-frame work β and energy projects, with staff available to design experiential, place-based learning for school groups, workshops, meetings, and retreats. The centre's programs reach from energy and climate topics to rural skills, and it hosts artists and builders in residence. Check thedeaneryproject.com for the current calendar; the project also posts events and workshop openings on its Facebook and Instagram pages.
