Walking Tours of Lunenburg β Guided Walks Through a UNESCO World Heritage Town
Walking Tours of Lunenburg is the longest-running dedicated walking tour operator in Old Town Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Nova Scotia's south shore. Founded more than 30 years ago and run by local guides who live in and around the town, the company operates a year-round roster of themed walks that cover Lunenburg's architecture, seafaring history, food, and ghost lore. The flagship Essential Lunenburg tour is the most popular introduction to the town β a 90-minute walk through the grid of 18th-century and Victorian streets that explains how a planned British colonial settlement founded in 1753 became one of the most photographed towns in Atlantic Canada.
Lunenburg itself is the draw. It is one of only two urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites in continental North America (the other is QuΓ©bec City), and its survival is genuinely unusual: the original 1753 street grid is intact, the colourful wooden houses still show the "Lunenburg bump" (a local dormer-window detail), and the working waterfront remains active with the Bluenose II, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and a fleet of sailing and fishing vessels. The Essential tour covers all of this with a mix of architectural history and storytelling; the Haunted Lunenburg tour, run by lantern light at 8:30 pm, leans into the town's reputation for folklore and ghost stories. The Tastes of Lunenburg food walk, the Sights & Spirits combo (walking tour, harbour boat cruise, and Ironworks Distillery tasting), and the full-day Day Tripper package round out the schedule.
The tours have built a loyal following among cruise passengers and day-trippers alike, and they run rain or shine, with a 48-hour cancellation policy for full refunds, and most walks depart from the area around 97 Kaulbach Street in the heart of Old Town.

Tips for Visitors
Book the Essential Lunenburg tour for your first morning in town β it functions as an orientation that makes the rest of a Lunenburg visit (the Fisheries Museum, the Bluenose II, the galleries along Montague Street) easier to place in context. For photographers, the late-afternoon light on the colourful houses along Pelham and Kaulbach streets is the iconic Lunenburg shot; build in time before or after your tour to walk that stretch slowly. The Haunted tour is genuinely popular and sells out in July and August β reserve several days ahead. If you have only one day in Lunenburg, the Day Tripper package is the most efficient way to see the town on foot, from the water, and through its maritime museum without having to coordinate separate bookings.
