About Caribou Beach
Caribou Beach is an 800-metre warm-water beach on the Northumberland Strait inside Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park, about 171 km — roughly two hours — from Halifax near Pictou. The park's large campground makes this one of the few Nova Scotia beaches built for multi-day stays: families return every summer for the shallow, calm water, which runs around 19°C in July and 20°C in August — among the warmest saltwater in the province. The beach itself faces north across the strait, and the sunsets over the water toward Prince Edward Island are exceptional — a nightly event for campers. Beyond swimming, the park offers hiking trails and a boat launch, and the tidal flats at low tide leave wide, walkable sand worth exploring. There is no lifeguard supervision, so swim within your comfort; the surf is calm and the shallows run far out, which is why the beach is so popular with children. Facilities include free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables. Wheelchair access is partial, and dogs are welcome on leash. Caribou pairs naturally with the town of Pictou's waterfront and the ferry to PEI that departs just up the shore.
