About Dominion Beach
Dominion Beach is the premier beach of industrial Cape Breton, a 1.5-kilometre sandy shoreline on the island's east coast about 416 km — roughly four hours — from Halifax and minutes from Glace Bay. Its signature feature is the boardwalk, which runs more than 1.5 kilometres behind the beach — popular for evening strolls, mobility-friendly beach access, and watching the Atlantic work the shore from a bench above the sand. Inside Dominion Beach Provincial Park, facilities are strong: free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables. Lifeguards supervise daily July 1 through August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, and the surf stays calm enough for family swimming, with water temperatures around 17°C in July and 19°C in August. Wheelchair access is rated full — one of the few Cape Breton beaches where the boardwalk makes the shoreline genuinely usable for wheelchairs and strollers alike. The beach draws high crowds from the surrounding communities on summer weekends and hosts community events through the season, giving it a local, lived-in feel rather than a tourist one. Dogs are welcome on leash. Dominion works as an easy beach day from Sydney or Glace Bay, or as a coastal stop on a Cape Breton loop that includes the Miners' Museum nearby.
