Quick Facts
History & Description
The Glace Bay North Breakwater Lighthouse sits at the outer end of the north breakwater sheltering Big Glace Bay on Cape Breton Island's east coast. The light marking the harbour today is a round fibreglass tower with a red top, a utilitarian modern structure built without a traditional lantern.
Breakwater lights have stood here since 1956, when a concrete tower on a square white building first guided vessels into Glace Bay's harbour. That earlier structure was replaced in 1990 by the present fibreglass tower, which was automated from the time of its construction.
Reached by car along the Marconi Trail, the breakwater offers sweeping views back toward the town of Glace Bay and out over the Atlantic. The light's simple, functional design is typical of modern harbour-entrance aids maintained along this stretch of the Cape Breton coast.
