Quick Facts
History & Description
Main-A-Dieu Lighthouse stood on the west end of Scatarie Island, marking the Main-a-Dieu Passage off the Marconi Trail on Cape Breton Island's eastern coast. It was reachable only by boat, and the original light first went into operation in 1871, a square wooden tower 40 feet tall painted white with a keeper's dwelling attached, its beam 90 feet above the water.
The station was renewed in 1921 with a second square wooden tower attached to a dwelling, and in that year it received a 4th order dioptric lens showing an occulting white light every 10 seconds. By 1930 the light was listed at 40 feet with a fog signal that answered passing vessels. The station was automated by 1965.
Neither of the Main-A-Dieu towers survives today, and the light is no longer operating. Scatarie Island remains an uninhabited wilderness area, and the passage the lights once marked is now followed mainly by fishing boats and the occasional excursion vessel.
