History & Description

The current Scatarie Lighthouse (Scatarie III, built 1981) is a square white tower on a fog signal building, still standing and operational as an active aid-to-navigation. The original 1839 octagonal wood tower it replaced is described below. Scatarie Island is also a designated Wilderness Area.

Scatarie I was established in 1839 as an octagonal wood tower to guide mariners past the dangerous reefs off Scatarie Island, at the eastern approach to Sydney Bight. The exposed, storm-battered location meant the original wooden tower and its successors required continual repair and eventual replacement.

The current Scatarie III (1981) is a square white tower built atop a fog signal building and remains an active, automated aid-to-navigation. Scatarie Island itself is a designated Nova Scotia Wilderness Area, protecting its rugged barrens, seabird colonies, and important wildlife habitat, and is valued by the nearby Mi'kmaq communities of the Cape Breton coast.
