Flint Island Lighthouse

Flint Island Lighthouse stands on a sandstone outcrop off the coast east of Sydney, Cape Breton, marking the eastern approach to Morien Bay. Tide rips form around the island and the irregular tidal streams can reach speeds of 2 knots, making a fixed navigational aid essential on this exposed stretch of the Marconi Trail coast.

The site has hosted four distinct lighthouse structures over more than 160 years. The first Flint Island Lighthouse, completed in 1856, was an octagonal wooden tower standing 43 feet tall. It was destroyed by fire on August 1, 1865, after only nine years of service.

A second wooden tower was erected in 1866 to replace the one lost to fire, and it guided mariners for more than four decades. In 1909 that structure was itself replaced by a third lighthouse — an octagonal concrete tower — which served the site until the early 1960s.

The present-day lighthouse is the fourth structure on Flint Island. Begun in 1961 and first lit in 1962, it is an octagonal concrete tower approximately 59 feet (18 metres) tall, painted white with a red lantern. This tower is still standing and operational today; it was automated by 1987 and is recognized as a Federal Heritage Building by Parks Canada for its design and its role in coastal navigation.
