Quick Facts
History & Description
The Sydney Rear Range Light is one of the historic range lights guiding vessels through Sydney Harbour on Cape Breton Island. It is a tapered square wooden tower, about 40 feet tall, painted white with a red stripe, first lit in 1905 and still standing and operational. Together with its front companion it lines up the channel into one of Atlantic Canada's busiest harbours.
The rear tower has carried a 4th order dioptric fixed white lens since 1922, rated at 38 feet of tower height and 120 feet above water, and was fitted with an electric lantern by 1992. It was automated by 1993, ending decades of keeper service. The light sits along the Marconi Trail close to downtown Sydney, where the steel mills and coal piers that the harbour once served are now giving way to waterfront renewal.
