History & Description

The Great Bras d'Or Rear Range Light stands on Noir Point at the narrow entrance to the Great Bras d'Or, the channel connecting the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Breton's inland Bras d'Or Lakes. It is one of a pair of range lights, this being the taller rear tower, a 46-foot square wooden structure painted white, that together guide vessels through the entrance.

Both range lights at Noir Point were established in 1903. Over the decades the rear tower's height was adjusted: it was lowered by two feet between 1968 and 1970, and by 1984 it carried a catadioptric lens at 55 feet above the point. The light was automated by 1993 and shows a fixed green characteristic.

Reached by car along the Marconi Trail, the rear range light is best understood together with its shorter front partner, 31 feet tall. Together they form a classic range-light alignment, allowing mariners to line up the two towers and hold a safe course through the Great Bras d'Or channel.
