Quick Facts
History & Description
The McNeil Beach Lighthouse was built in 1884 on the eastern shore of the Great Bras d'Or channel in Cape Breton. The structure is a tapered square wood tower painted white. It served as an important navigational aid for vessels transiting the Bras d'Or Lakes through the Great Bras d'Or channel near the Seal Island Bridge.
The light was automated by 1962 and was ultimately abandoned in 1990. Though no longer operating, the lighthouse structure remains standing and is clearly visible from the Seal Island Bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 105). Access requires a hike from the nearest road. The lighthouse has been the focus of community preservation efforts by the Boularderie Island Historical Society.
