St. Ann's Bay Lookout

Perched along the Cabot Trail, St. Ann's Bay Lookout is one of Cape Breton's most photographed viewpoints. From its elevated position on the west side of Kellys Mountain, the lookout surveys St. Ann's Bay, the surrounding highlands, and the winding Cabot Trail itself. Dramatic cliffs, open ocean, and the Gaelic communities of the neighbouring valleys make it an essential stop on any first circuit of the island.

The lookout sits at roughly 255 metres elevation on the southbound lane of the Cabot Trail near Englishtown, with a paved stopping area that makes it an easy reward for any traveller — most visits last only 5-10 minutes, yet the panoramic view encompasses St. Ann's Harbour, the bay, the Cape Breton Highlands plateau, and on clear days extends to Murray Mountain and the Englishtown ferry crossing. The lookout is widely regarded as the most photographed lookoff point on Cape Breton Island, at its best during fall foliage and at sunrise or sunset when golden light rakes across the highlands. The nearby St. Ann's Provincial Park offers a 500-metre trail to a second formal lookout overlooking a saltmarsh, and the surrounding area is rich in Gaelic heritage — the Gaelic College is up the road in St. Ann's.
