History & Description

Gillis Point Lighthouse overlooks the south entrance to Maskell's Harbour on Cape Breton's Bras d'Or Lakes. The tower standing today is a square wooden structure painted white, 37 feet tall, marking the point for boaters navigating the sheltered inland waters of the lakes.

A lighthouse was first established on this point in 1895: a square wood tower with an attached keeper's dwelling and a red lantern, originally 38 feet high. That first tower served for nearly ninety years, equipped over time with a seventh-order dioptric lens, before being replaced by the present tower in 1984.

The current tower was automated from the start and by 1992 carried an electric lantern flashing white every four seconds on a seasonal (May to December) basis. Reached by car along the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive, it is a quiet photo stop and a useful landmark for sailors entering Maskell's Harbour.
