History & Description

Ciboux Island Lighthouse was first established in 1863 on the larger of the Bird Islands off Cape Dauphin, Cape Breton Island. The original octagonal wooden tower was replaced by a square wooden dwelling with lantern on the roof in 1875. Also known as Bird Island, the light marked the entrance to the Great Bras d'Or channel for vessels approaching from the Atlantic.

The lighthouse was automated in 1952 after the last keeper departed. The original wooden structure was sold off in 1971 following vandalism, replaced first by a skeleton tower and later, in 1980, by a fibreglass tower powered by solar-charged batteries. The Canadian Coast Guard discontinued the light entirely in 2017. Today the site is located within the Bird Islands Wildlife Management Area, designated in 1989, and is accessible only by boat. The islands are notable for their seabird colonies and serve as a popular destination for birdwatching tours from Cape Breton.
