Quick Facts
History & Description
Black Rock Point Lighthouse stands on Cape Breton Island's eastern shore, marking the entrance to the Great Bras d'Or channel from St. Anns Bay. Designated a Heritage Lighthouse in 2017, the current tower was built in 1978 on a forested clifftop a short distance from the Trans-Canada Highway.
A light was first established on this site in 1868, with Donald Morrison as the first keeper and Frank Kozera the last before automation. The station once guided coal shipments from Sydney through the Bras d'Or Lakes during Cape Breton's industrial era and later supported local fishing. The present white square tower carries a red octagonal lantern on the corner of its engine room.
Now automated with a seasonal fog horn, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation accessible by car along the Marconi Trail. Its isolated setting above a rugged stretch of coastline makes it a quiet, scenic stop for travellers exploring the Bras d'Or Lakes region.
