Quick Facts
History & Description
The Great Bras d'Or Front Range Light is the shorter of the two range towers on Noir Point, at the entrance to the Great Bras d'Or channel leading into Cape Breton's Bras d'Or Lakes. It is a 31-foot square wooden tower painted white, positioned so that mariners can align it with the taller rear light to hold a safe course through the narrow entrance.
Established together with its rear partner in 1903, the front light originally carried a seventh-order dioptric lens. It was lowered by one foot between 1968 and 1970, and by 1984 was fitted with a sixth-order dioptric lens showing a light 41 feet above the water. Like the rear tower it was automated by 1993 and displays a fixed green light.
The two Noir Point range lights remain among the most historically intact wooden range-light pairs on Cape Breton Island. Reached by car along the Marconi Trail, they offer visitors a clear illustration of how range lights work: two towers lined up to mark a single safe channel.
