Quick Facts
History & Description
Man Of War Point Lighthouse stood on the point along the east shore of the Great Bras d'Or on Cape Breton Island, reached by a hike along the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive in Victoria County. It first went into service in 1912, a square wooden tower 32 feet tall painted white, displaying a fixed white light 32 feet above the water.
Fitted with a 5th order dioptric lens in 1922, the light marked the entrance to the Great Bras d'Or for vessels using the inland lakes. Its working life was comparatively short: the tower was destroyed in 1925 and replaced by a temporary light on a pole, which was still in operation by 1930. The station was automated around 1965.
The story does not end there. Around 2000 the remains were sold to a private party, the structure was cut in half and moved inland, and today no tower stands at the point. The site is now a curiosity for hikers on the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive, who can find the area's history but not the light itself.
