Quick Facts
History & Description
Little Narrows Lighthouse stood on Curlew Point at the east entrance to the narrows of the St. Patrick Channel on Cape Breton Island, part of the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive. The first light here went into service in 1881, a square wooden tower 35 feet tall painted white, displaying a fixed white light 40 feet above the water.
That wooden tower carried a catatropic lens from 1922 and was still in operation by 1930, marking the narrow passage for vessels moving through the Bras d'Or Lakes. After a century of service the original tower was replaced in 1982 by a round fibreglass tower without a lantern, a utilitarian successor that has itself since been removed.
No tower now stands at Little Narrows, and the light is no longer operating. Travellers on the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive pass close by the narrows, where the channel the light once guarded remains a well-used route between the lakes.
