Quick Facts
History & Description
Gregory Island Lighthouse once stood on the western point of Gregory Island, marking the north entrance to St. Peter's Inlet on Cape Breton's Bras d'Or Lakes. The original structure was a 33-foot square wooden tower painted white, positioned to guide vessels through the inlet's approaches.
First lit in 1884, the lighthouse was equipped with a seventh-order dioptric lens between 1922 and 1941 showing a fixed red light. It was automated by 1973, and in 1982 the aging wooden tower was replaced by a round fibreglass tower bearing two red stripes and no lantern. Neither structure survives at the site today.
Because the station occupies a small offshore island reachable only by boat along the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive, Gregory Island is now a quiet, uninhabited spot. The light's history reflects a common pattern on the lakes, in which a Victorian wooden tower eventually gave way to a modern automated aid.
