History & Description

The current Green Island Lighthouse (Green Island III, built 1987) is a circular white fiberglass tower with a red lantern, still standing and operational as an automated aid-to-navigation on Green Island in Chedabucto Bay, off the coast of Richmond County. The original 1865 structure it replaced is described below.

Green Island I was established in 1865 as a lantern mounted on the roof of a square wooden keeper's dwelling, white, standing 31 feet high, to mark the dangerous approach to the Canso area. The original wooden dwelling light was followed in 1968 by a skeleton tower with an enclosed stairway (Green Island II), reflecting the shift toward automated, unattended aids on this remote island.

Green Island III (1987), the current structure, is a circular fiberglass tower, white with a red lantern, an automated and solarized aid-to-navigation that remains active today. Green Island itself sits at the eastern entrance to Chedabucto Bay and is reachable only by boat.
