Quick Facts
History & Description
The River Bourgeois Inlet Lighthouse guards the narrow entrance to River Bourgeois on Lennox Passage, in the heart of Cape Breton's Bras d'Or Lakes region. It is a tapered square wooden tower, about 27 feet tall, painted with a red and white rectangular daymark that makes it easy to pick out against the shoreline. The original 1903 tower was destroyed in 1989, but a community-built replica from 1992 stands today and continues as an operational light.
Carrying a 7th order dioptric lens from 1922, the light was automated before 1973 and was briefly replaced by a steel skeleton tower around 1990. In 2005 the community restored the replica wooden tower, which is now lit seasonally at night as a private aid to navigation, a familiar beacon for boats using Lennox Passage. The village sits along the Fleur-de-lis Trail, where Acadian French culture and quiet coastal scenery define the drive.
