Quick Facts
History & Description
Marache Point Lighthouse stands at the south entrance to Arichat Harbour on Isle Madame, on Cape Breton Island's Fleur-de-lis Trail in Richmond County. It is one of the older aids on this coast: local residents had established a beacon here by 1849, and the formal lighthouse first went into operation in 1851, making it well over 170 years old.
The present tower is a tapered square wooden structure 23 feet tall, painted white with a red lantern, with its beam 34 feet above the water. It carried a catatropic light listed as Arichat Harbour by 1883, received a 5th order dioptric lens showing a fixed white light with a hand foghorn in 1922, and added a fog signal in 1930; the station was automated by 1993. Keeper Joseph Coste served here in the 1850s.
Marache Point still stands and remains operational, and local tours organized through Isle Madame Lighthouses make it one of the more accessible heritage lights in the area. Reached by a short hike, it is a rewarding stop for anyone following the Fleur-de-lis Trail around Isle Madame.
