Quick Facts
History & Description
The Canso Rear Range Light, first lit in 1905, is a square wooden tower painted white, standing 44 feet tall on the south entrance to Canso Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. This rear range light works alongside the Canso Front Range Light as a pair to guide fishing vessels safely into one of North America's oldest continuously operating fishing ports. The community of Canso has been settled since approximately 1604, making it the oldest fishing port on mainland North America.
The light was originally lit by an oil lamp and received its first electric light in 1941, when its characteristic changed to Fixed Red. It was automated by 1993, and its characteristic was changed to Fixed Yellow in 1992. The tower sits south of Lanigan Beach on the Marine Drive scenic route in Guysborough County, accessible by car. The light is no longer operating but remains standing as a historic structure.
