Quick Facts
History & Description
Country Island Lighthouse stands on the remote island's south shore, guarding the approaches to Country Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The current tower, built in 1965, is an octagonal concrete structure painted white with a red lantern and rises 45 feet, making it one of the taller lights on the Eastern Shore.
A lighthouse has occupied this island since 1873, when an earlier tapered wooden tower marked with red bands served the harbour approaches and was later raised in height in 1927. Keeper Jim Guptill tended the station through the late 1960s and early 1970s. The present concrete tower was automated by 1986 and remains operational today.
Accessible only by boat, the island light is part of the Marine Drive's offshore navigation network and remains one of the more remote and hard-to-reach lighthouses in Guysborough County.
