Quick Facts
History & Description
The Canso Front Range Light has guided mariners into Canso Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore since 1905. Built as the front half of a range light pair, the square wooden tower once worked in tandem with a rear light that vessels aligned to navigate safely into port.
Canso is one of the oldest European settlements in Nova Scotia, and its harbour long served the region's fishing and maritime trade. The tower stands 32 feet tall with its light originally positioned 46 feet above the water, later reduced during the 1960s. Keeper Bill Ringer tended the light through the late 1980s and 1990s.
Automated by 1993 and no longer in active service, the white tower still stands south of Lanigan Beach. It is reached by car along the Marine Drive, a reminder of the historic port's seafaring past.
