Quick Facts
History & Description
The Mabou Harbour Front Range Light stood on the breakwater on the south side of the harbour channel at Mabou, on Cape Breton Island's Ceilidh Trail in Inverness County. Lit in 1884, it was a square wooden tower 37 feet tall painted white, displaying a fixed white light 46 feet above the water and working in concert with a rear range to guide boats into the harbour.
The station saw steady change through its working life. It was altered in 1908, by 1922 carried a 5th order dioptric lens, and was still serving as a range light in 1930. Between 1955 and 1962 the wooden tower was replaced by a skeleton tower, bringing an end to the traditional structure on the breakwater.
No tower from the original Mabou front range survives today, and the light is no longer operating. Mabou Harbour itself remains a focal point of the Ceilidh Trail, better known now for its music and cultural scene than for its lights.
