History & Description

The Cheticamp Harbour Rear Range Light was built in 1890 on the east side of Cheticamp's eastern harbour, working as the taller partner of the front range light to guide vessels safely into port. The square wooden tower with its red lantern stood 38 feet tall, with its light reaching 71 feet above the waters of the harbour.

Rear range lights are built taller than their front partners so that mariners can align the two lights vertically when approaching on the correct course. This tower underwent several alterations over the years, including changes in 1894, 1914, and 1929, before being replaced by a skeleton structure in the 1960s.

Part of the historic range system serving the Acadian community of Cheticamp, the light sits along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton's scenic west coast.
