Quick Facts
History & Description
Built in 1900, the Margaree Harbour Front Range Lighthouse is a traditional, square tapered wooden tower standing 22 feet (6.8 metres) tall. Painted white, it operates as a fixed red light and forms one half of the Margaree Harbour Range Lights, guiding vessels into the harbour from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is located on the west side of the entrance to the Margaree River in Inverness County, Cape Breton Island.
The lighthouse is owned by the Margaree Harbour Heritage Lighthouse Group and was designated as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act on May 23, 2019. Both range lights underwent major renovations by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2018, including new shingles, waterproof membrane, sheathing, and paint.
Both range lights can be seen from the Harbour Bridge on the famous Cabot Trail and have become a central feature of the small fishing village of Margaree Harbour. The front range light stands approximately 65 metres in front of the rear range light, guiding vessels safely into the harbour entrance.
