Margaree Harbour Beach sits at the mouth of the Margaree River where it meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Cape Breton's west coast, about 374 km — roughly four hours — from Halifax. The setting is the draw: the salmon river — one of the most famous in Atlantic Canada — slides out over a sand and cobble flat past the breakwater, fishing boats work the bar, and the Cape Breton Highlands rise blue in the distance to the north. The 600-metre beach is a mix of sand and stone, with calm surf in most conditions and water temperatures around 17°C in July and 19°C in August. There is no lifeguard supervision and facilities are lean — free parking and picnic tables only, no washrooms or change rooms — so plan it as a stop on a drive rather than a full beach day. Crowd levels are low, wheelchair access is limited, and dogs are welcome on leash. Walking, photography, and beachcombing are the core uses; the river mouth shifts shape with every storm. Margaree Harbour is a natural waypoint on the Cabot Trail's western leg: the beach marks the start of the Margaree Valley drive inland, and the Ceilidh Trail coast road runs south from here toward Mabou and Judique.
