History & Description

Built in 1900, the Margaree Harbour Rear Range Lighthouse is a traditional, square tapered wooden tower standing 33 feet (10 metres) tall. Painted white with a fixed red catoptric light elevated 105 feet above water level, it forms the rear component of the Margaree Harbour Range Lights, guiding vessels into the harbour from the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Owned by the Margaree Harbour Heritage Lighthouse Group, the rear range light was designated as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act on May 23, 2019. It stands approximately 65 metres behind the front range light, and both towers underwent major renovations by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2018.

The rear range light is visible from the Harbour Bridge on the Cabot Trail and, together with its companion front light, has been a vital navigational aid for the fishing community of Margaree Harbour for over a century.
