Quick Facts
History & Description
The Caveau Point Front Range Light has marked the entrance to Cheticamp Harbour on Cape Breton's west coast since 1897. The square wooden tower stands 27 feet tall with its light positioned 52 feet above the water, working as the front half of a range light pair that guided vessels safely into the Acadian fishing community of Cheticamp.
Range lights operate in pairs, with mariners aligning the front and rear lights to hold a steady course into the harbour. This front light was fitted with a sixth order dioptric lens in the 1920s and automated by 1993. Though no longer in active service, the white tower still stands on the point alongside the Cabot Trail.
Reached by car, the lighthouse is part of the historic maritime landscape of Inverness County, where French Acadian culture has shaped the Cheticamp region for generations.
