History & Description

The Cheticamp Harbour Front Range Light has marked the east side of Cheticamp's eastern harbour entrance since 1890, guiding vessels into the heart of this Acadian fishing community on Cape Breton's west coast. The original square wooden tower with its red lantern was placed in the care of the local community, reflecting the region's strong tradition of preserving its maritime heritage.

Range lights work as a pair, with mariners aligning the front and rear lights to hold a safe course into the harbour. In 1990 the original ranges were replaced by a modern sector light, and by 1999 a round fiberglass structure took over the front position. The historic 1890 tower itself remains standing under community stewardship.

Reached by car along the Cabot Trail, the lighthouse sits at the gateway to Cheticamp, one of the cultural centres of French Acadian life in Cape Breton.
