About Lawrencetown Beach

Lawrencetown Beach is Nova Scotia's surfing capital, a 1.5 km stretch of sand 26 km — about 30 minutes — east of Halifax where the Atlantic swell arrives with dependable consistency. The beach faces open ocean, and surf conditions are rated rough: this is a wade-carefully beach for swimmers but a magnet for surfers, boogie-boarders, and anyone who likes watching people ride cold-water waves from the warmth of a picnic table. The beach is part of Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park, and the facilities are the most complete of any surf break in the region: free parking, washrooms, change rooms, picnic tables, and a canteen for post-session food. Lifeguards supervise from July 1 to August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, though the rough surf means the supervised zone matters more here than at calmer beaches. Water temperatures peak near 18°C in August — a 4/3 wetsuit is standard equipment most of the season. Surfing and walking are the two activities the beach is built for, and its crowd level runs high on summer weekends as surf schools and day-trippers share the sand. Dogs are allowed on leash, and access is partially wheelchair accessible. Arrive early in peak season; the parking lot is the gateway to every surf session in the city and fills accordingly.
