Swim the Canal

Swim the Canal was one of Cape Breton's most unique summer traditions — a one-day event where participants swam the historic St. Peter's Canal, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Bras d'Or Lake. The 800-metre swim started on the Bras d'Or Lake side and ended at Battery Provincial Park beach on the Atlantic Ocean — a celebration of Cape Breton's rich maritime heritage, with the canal having served as a vital shipping route since 1869.

Now operated by Parks Canada as a National Historic Site, St. Peter's Canal provides a sheltered swimming environment unlike anywhere else in Nova Scotia. Participants emerged from the canal on the Atlantic Ocean side, greeted by a festive atmosphere with food, music, and fellow swimmers celebrating the achievement. The event welcomed swimmers of all levels, from competitive athletes to recreational swimmers looking for a bucket-list experience.

Registration was $25 and included a commemorative t-shirt. Swimmers brought their own safety buoy and were encouraged to arrive early for check-in. The 2026 edition took place on August 2 at St. Peter's Canal National Historic Site. Spectators watched the swim from the canal banks and enjoyed the park setting with picnic facilities and walking trails.
