About Swim the Canal
Swim the Canal is one of Cape Breton's most unique summer traditions β a one-day event where participants swim the historic St. Peter's Canal, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Bras d'Or Lake. This 800-metre swim starts on the Bras d'Or Lake side and ends at Battery Provincial Park beach on the Atlantic Ocean β a celebration of Cape Breton's rich maritime heritage, with the canal having served as a vital shipping route since 1869.
Now operated by Parks Canada as a National Historic Site, St. Peter's Canal provides a sheltered swimming environment unlike anywhere else in Nova Scotia. Participants emerge from the canal on the Atlantic Ocean side, greeted by a festive atmosphere with food, music, and fellow swimmers celebrating the achievement. The event welcomes swimmers of all levels, from competitive athletes to recreational swimmers looking for a bucket-list experience.
Registration is $25 and includes a commemorative t-shirt. Swimmers must bring their own safety buoy and are encouraged to arrive early for check-in. The event has grown significantly in recent years, so early registration is recommended. Spectators can watch the swim from the canal banks and enjoy the park setting with picnic facilities and walking trails.
