Quick Facts
History & Description
The Indian Harbour Lighthouse, often called Paddy's Head Lighthouse, stands on the southeast point of Paddy Head Island at the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay on Nova Scotia's South Shore. The 25-foot tapered square wooden tower, painted white, is one of the smaller and more picturesque lights along the Lighthouse Route.
First lit in 1901, the lighthouse was equipped with a sixth-order dioptric lens between 1922 and 1941 showing a fixed white light. It was automated remarkably early, by 1945, and by 1992 carried an electric mercury-vapour lantern, reflecting more than a century of continuous technological updates.
Reached by a short hike rather than by car, the tower still stands today and is cared for in part by the Friends of Paddy's Head Lighthouse Society. Its accessible coastal setting makes it a favourite stop for photographers exploring the St. Margaret's Bay stretch of the Lighthouse Route.
