Quick Facts
History & Description
Pearl Island (originally known as Green Island) Lighthouse marks the south point of the island at the entrance to Mahone Bay on Nova Scotia's South Shore. First established in 1874, there have been three lighthouse structures on this island over its history. The current structure is a red lantern mounted on the roof of a square white wooden building, showing an occulting white light. The lighthouse was automated by 1963 and remains an active navigational aid, though accessible only by boat.
The first lighthouse on Green Island was built in 1873-1874, a tall white pyramidal wooden tower erected to help mariners distinguish the entrance to Mahone Bay from St. Margaret's Bay. In 1922, a 4th order dioptric lens was installed, with the tower attached to the keeper's dwelling at 28 feet tall with a light height of 66 feet. The second structure modified the arrangement, and by the 1960s the light was fully automated. Today, the lighthouse continues to guide vessels approaching Mahone Bay and is visible from the water along the Lighthouse Route.
