About Evangeline Beach
Evangeline Beach is a two-kilometre stretch of mixed sand and red mudflat on the Minas Basin, in Kings County in the Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley region, about 103 kilometres from Halifax and minutes from Grand Pré. It is best known as a world-renowned shorebird migration site: each July and August, hundreds of thousands of semipalmated sandpipers stop here to feed and rest on their migration from the Canadian Arctic to South America. For birders it is one of the signature wildlife spectacles in eastern Canada, and for everyone else it is a striking stretch of Fundy coastline with some of the highest tides on Earth moving across it twice a day. The sandpipers are the headline act. Flocks build through late July and peak in August, and the shorebird season on the Minas Basin mudflats runs from July into September. Semipalmated sandpipers dominate, but semipalmated plovers, willets, and great blue herons work the same flats, and the sight of thousands of small birds wheeling over the water in tight flocks is what people come for. Give the feeding flocks plenty of room: these birds are refuelling for a non-stop flight over the ocean to South America, and every disturbance costs them energy they cannot spare. Watch from the upper beach with binoculars rather than walking out toward the birds. The tides shape everything here. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides on Earth, confirmed by Guinness World Records, and at Evangeline the water rises and falls across vast tidal flats of red mud. Plan your visit around the tide table: the flats and the birds are best within about two hours either side of low tide, and you should check tides.gc.ca before you go. The sunsets over Blomidon, across the basin, are a famous finish to an evening visit. Facilities are simple, which suits the low crowds and quiet character. Parking is free, and there are washrooms and picnic tables, but no change rooms, canteen, or boardwalk. There are no lifeguards and the surf is calm, while August water temperatures sit around 16 degrees. Wheelchair access is partial, and dogs are allowed on leash, though a beach with feeding shorebird flocks is a place to keep them well back from the birds. Evangeline Beach is best for bird watching and walking rather than swimming, and that is exactly its charm.
