Quick Facts
History & Description
Coldspring Head Lighthouse has stood on the north side of the head in Cumberland County since 1890, guiding mariners through the warm waters of the Northumberland Strait. The tapered square wooden tower with its red lantern rises 36 feet, with the light positioned 60 feet above the water just 100 feet from shore.
Automated by 1980, the lighthouse was later restored and repaired by the community, with documentation of major work completed in 2010. Today the tower is owned and cared for by the Coldspring Heritage Society, one of several Nova Scotia lights that have passed from federal hands into community stewardship to ensure their preservation.
Reached by a hike along the Sunrise Trail near Amherst, the no-longer-operating light overlooks the strait that separates Nova Scotia from Prince Edward Island.
