Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pugwash Lighthouse has watched over Pugwash Harbour on the Northumberland Strait since 1871. The original structure was a square wooden tower built on top of a service building, an unusual arrangement that made it roughly 44 feet tall. Today the original tower still stands, but it was moved to a nearby farm around 1961 when a skeleton tower took over the active aid to navigation.
First showing a catadioptric lens that displayed red to seaward and white into the harbour, the light was upgraded to a 4th order occulting white dioptric lens by 1922. The original wooden tower is no longer operating but survives on its relocated site, one of the more curious chapters in Nova Scotia lighthouse history. Pugwash itself sits along the Sunrise Trail and is known for its salt mine, warm-water beaches, and the conferences that bear its name.
