Quick Facts
History & Description
The current Sable Island West End Lighthouse (West End IV, built 1951) is a square skeleton tower and active aid-to-navigation still standing and operational. The original 1872 octagonal wooden tower it replaced is described in the historical information below.
West End I was established in 1872 as an octagonal wooden tower marking the western tip of Sable Island, paired with the East End light to bracket the crescent-shaped sand bar. The hostile Atlantic environment and shifting dunes required repeated rebuilding, and West End II and III replaced the original wooden tower as it succumbed to storms and encroaching sand.
The current West End IV (1951) is a square skeleton tower that was automated and continues to operate as an active aid-to-navigation. Sable Island itself is one of Canada's most remote and storied outposts, home to wild horses, grey seals, and the wrecks of more than 350 ships, and was designated a National Park Reserve in 2013.
