History & Description

Hog Island Lighthouse, known historically as Port Felix Lighthouse, was established on July 1, 1902 to guide mariners into the harbour at Port Felix on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The original structure was a square wooden dwelling with a square wooden lantern rising from the middle of the cottage roof. The entire building, including the lantern, was painted white and stood 37 feet high from base to vane. The fixed white light was elevated 42 feet above high-water mark and was visible for 8 miles using a dioptric seventh-order illuminating apparatus. Construction cost $2,517.58 under the supervision of foreman James A. Hall.

The light was automated in 1966 with a six-volt light and automatic bulb changer, ending the era of resident keepers. The original wooden lighthouse was replaced on November 22, 1988 by a slender white fibreglass tower. Today, a square metal skeleton tower displays a flashing white light at the site. The original lighthouse structure is no longer standing, but the site remains an active aid to navigation marking the entrance to Port Felix Harbour.

Keepers: W.C. Boudrot (1902-1913), William H. David (1913-1927), D.V. Cashin (1928-at least 1937).
