History & Description
The 67 foot timber lighthouse on the island is the original, built 1830-31, and it is the second oldest lighthouse tower in Nova Scotia. The lantern is an aluminium replacement installed in 1978, containing a modern beacon that still serves as an active aid to navigation. In Barrington, the Seal Island Light Museum is a 35 foot high replica of the top half of this lighthouse, crowned by the cast-iron lantern that was removed from the light in 1978 and housing the Fresnel lens that was taken out at the same time.
Until the station was de-staffed, keepers and their families lived on the island year-round, tending the light from a large double dwelling that once stood beside the tower. The station was later automated, ending more than a century and a half of resident keepers on this exposed offshore island.
