History & Description

The Queensport Lighthouse stands on Rook Island at the entrance to Queensport Harbour, opening onto Chedabucto Bay on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The present light is a square wooden building with a red lantern mounted on its roof, about 41 feet tall, built in 1937 to replace an earlier 1882 tower. It is still standing and operational, automated by 1967.

The original 1882 square wooden tower with attached dwelling guided ships into Crow Harbour with a 6th order light; it was replaced in 1937 by the current white building and red lantern, carrying a flashing white lens. Queensport's keepers included John Ehler III, who tended the first light from 1882, followed by generations of Hendsbees, Munros, Carters and O'Learys until automation in 1967. The light is a landmark along the Marine Drive, visible from the Guysborough coast.
